Plant Medicine Pro and Con
It’s important to note from the outset, that I am not a practitioner or participant in plant medicine. In fact, I’m not a fan, for the reasons I’ll go into at the end of this article. However, for some people, there are benefits. The purpose of this article is to give you informed choice, and to ensure that you take the best care of yourself, before, during and after the process.
What is a plant medicine ceremony?
Plant medicine ceremonies, are rituals which involve the use of various plants or their derivatives for medicinal or spiritual purposes. While many studies have shown therapeutic benefits, there can also be a negative impact.
The Possible Benefits
When conducted safely and responsibly, plant medicines have been shown to have several potential benefits for individuals. Here are some of the most commonly reported benefits:
- Spiritual and emotional healing: Many plant medicines have been traditionally used for spiritual and emotional healing. They may help individuals to gain insight into their emotions, behaviors, and life purpose, and to work through traumatic experiences or emotional blockages.
- Improved mental health: Some plant medicines, such as psilocybin, have shown promise in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. They may help to reset the brain and provide a new perspective on life.In a John Hopkin’s University Study, psilocybin treatment yielded results up to one year after the treatment when coupled with psychotherapy.
- Increased self-awareness and personal growth: Plant medicines can help individuals to become more self-aware and to connect with their inner selves. They may help to increase empathy, compassion, and understanding of others, and to foster personal growth and development.
- Connection to nature and the universe: Many plant medicines are derived from natural sources and are believed to have a spiritual connection to the universe. They may help individuals to feel more connected to nature and the cosmos, and to gain a deeper appreciation of the interconnectedness of all things.
- Positive lifestyle changes: Some individuals report making positive changes to their lifestyle after participating in a plant medicine ceremony. For example, they may start exercising more, eating healthier, or engaging in more meaningful relationships.
It is important to note that the benefits of plant medicine ceremonies are not guaranteed, and they may not be suitable for everyone. It is essential to approach plant medicine ceremonies with caution and to do thorough research beforehand, and to seek the guidance of a qualified facilitator.
The Risks
There are several reasons why plant ceremonies carry inherent risk. First, practitioners come at all levels of skill, training and ethical practice. Heck even 50% of doctors were in the bottom of their class. Secondly, the quality of the substance used for the ceremony can vary greatly. And knowing how any individual will respond to the substance can not be predicted.
Here are some of the most common side effects:
1. Physical risks: Depending on the plant used and the dosage, plant medicines can have physical effects on the body, such as increased heart rate, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. In extreme cases, they can even cause lasting organ damage.
2. Psychological risks: Plant medicines can also have profound effects on the mind, which can be both positive and negative. Some people may experience intense emotions, such as fear, anxiety, or paranoia, while others may have deeply spiritual or mystical experiences. However, these experiences can be unpredictable, and some people may have a difficult time integrating them into their daily lives.
3. Interactions with medications: Some plant medicines can interact with prescription medications, causing dangerous side effects. For example, ayahuasca, a plant-based brew used in traditional Amazonian medicine, can interact with antidepressants, causing serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition.
It is essential to approach plant medicine ceremonies with caution and to do thorough research beforehand. Consult with a medical professional and a qualified facilitator to understand the potential risks and benefits and make an informed decision. Ask your facilitator what they provide in terms of preparation and aftercare. Can you speak to any of their other clients?
When Side Effects Get Scary
My first healing teacher Barbara Brennan described the effects of LSD as ripping off the shields on all your chakras. Basically, the use of psychedelics abruptly opens your ability to sense energetic phenomena. And the shields, or filter, don’t go back up. While some people integrate seamlessly, others are now too aware. They can be overwhelmed by sensory information or even spirits, ghosts and demons.
